Please note: The ShapeShift Core Carry Pack, formerly known as the Starter Kit, has been renamed to better represent the four most popular “core” carry styles within our growing modular holster system.

S&W M&P40c ShapeShift Modular Holster Kit

The ShapeShift Modular Holster System is patent pending.

Some people like to have options with how they carry their M&P compact, but very few M&P40C holster models out there will give you many. Sure, there are a few that let you change OWB loops for IWB clips, but some people still want a bit more. Also, not all such holsters are designed to carry comfortably - after all, a huge amount of plastic strapped to your waist isn't the most comfortable thing in the world.

But it doesn't have to be that way. Given the versatility of the S&W M&P40C, it's well-suited for both concealed and open carry. It also works well in the appendix position. Unfortunately, very few S&W M&P40C holsters do too.

But this one does.

The ShapeShift M&P40C edition is not a holster. It's a concealed carry system, which is perfectly adapted to the carry lifestyle by offering numerous modes and configurations of carry including both open carry and also serving expertly as an M&P40C concealed carry holster.

The shell system of the ShapeShift - devised by Alien Gear - is what allows for the versatility of usage. Both full-length and half-length shells (both included in your base kit) can be interchanged, fitting together by means of a friction-locking rail and twist lock, which lock together without the use of tools. You can assemble two half-shells for a full wrap, or use a full shell and half shell with a backer and your choice of belt attachment.

For instance, the larger backer included in the kit can be fitted with a full shell and half shell to create a traditional hybrid M&P40C IWB holster, much like the kind you're used to seeing such as our award-winning Cloak Tuck 3.0. In fact, the backer is of the same construction, right down to the neoprene backpad and Alien Skin surface. The belt clips are also adjustable for ride height and cant.

However, you can attach that same shell configuration to the smaller shell for two possible carry modes. First, if you attach the larger IWB clip, is an M&P40C appendix holster, should you prefer the "grab and go" convenience and deep concealment of appendix carry.

You can also attach the belt slide attachments and create a high-riding hybrid M&P40C OWB holster. It rides high and tight to the body, all but disappearing under an untucked shirt or light outerwear.

Or, you can assemble the full-wrap shell configuration and deploy the paddle attachment for an ultra-durable M&P40C paddle holster.

Retention is fully adjustable, as you can elect for adjustable levels of passive retention or install the included active retention devices.

As with our other holsters, the ShapeShift comes with our Iron Clad Guarantee - including a 30-day "Test Drive" trial period and lifetime warranty. During the first 30 days of ownership, you can return the holster for a full refund if unsatisfied. We think you won't want to take it off.

Lastly, should any issue arise with your ShapeShift holster at any point during its lifetime, we will fix the problem or we will give you a brand new holster. Period.

You can launch yourself into a whole new world of carry possibilities...

Great holster so far! Review by Kelly

I just received my order today (the Shape Shift Core Carry Pack), and have tested it out with both my 1911 and my M&P .40. I love the comfort I have when sitting, standing or walking with the IWB holster. My only complaint is that the belt clips are just a little TOO secure, making it extremely difficult to remove the holster without taking off my pants and detaching the clip from the IWB pad before I can take the clip off of the belt. Other than that, I am very happy with my purchase so far. As soon as I get my license to carry, I will be testing it out every time I leave the house, getting more comfortable with it and figuring out exactly how I want it positioned to properly conceal and still function well if I ever need to draw my weapon. good but not perfect Review by Adam

I recently received shapeshift core carry pack after about 3 weeks after placing an order. The packaging is very impressive and well organized, which was unexpected. Due to the flexible nature of the kit, there are quite a few parts included in the box, some small and some tiny. The plastic appears for the half shells to be sturdy and pieces fit together ok except the small twist locks are a bit of a challenge due to their size and the manufacturing tolerances. On the IWB pad stitching was not perfect and threads were loose that I trimmed myself.

I am not a big guy, 5'7" about 165lb with 32 inch waist so the only workable config for my CCW, became IWB setup. My pistol is Glock 48, so the appendix option is just too bulky and takes too much space up front near the belt buckle. It does not offer enough adjustability to make it work for me. The clip sticks out a bit far so I did not really like that. I also tried OWB holster configurations, and I liked the features and retention, however the geared swivel quick release mechanism keeps the gun and the holster about half an inch from the body which again proves a bit too bulky. It is possible to remove the the pivot quick connect setup , and bolt the full holster to the belt clip, which I preferred more. The only other comment I wanted to add, is that only IWB configuration has adjustable ride height. All the other setups are pretty much fixed with some tilt tweaks possible. I am also a little concerned that the retention tabs can mar the finish on the trigger guard after repeated use, especially on the polymer pistols, if made too tight.

In summary, the comfort for all the setups proved to be good, just the size and bulkiness can be a hindrance for smaller folks. The kit provides a lot of options, but will require some significant trial and error to find the config that works best for you. (Posted on 11/17/2020)

I've worn the IWB holster from the Core pack several hours a day for over 4 months before writing this review. From fit to features, comfort to quality I've not found a better holster for my needs. The versatility to change modes when needed is terrific and very easy. I'm ordering additional products and don't hesitate to recommend Aliengear. (Posted on 11/9/2020)
The Quality Isn't What it Once Was Review by TWS 607

I bought the Shape Shift Core Carry Pack based on my experience with a Shape Shift IWB holster that I purchased for another gun a few years back. I still have and use that holster and it is one of the best holsters that I have. The Core Carry Pack that I purchased this past summer is horrible. quality. It took Alien Gear about 4 weeks to ship my holster out because they were so far behind manufacturing their products, I do not believe there was any quality control in the process. It is very difficult to slide my gun into the holster and removing it as well. I have adjusted the tension to the point that it is at the least amount without the shell falling off. I paid a lot of money for the Core Carry Pack and I am very unhappy with it. I do not recommend this product. (Posted on 11/8/2020)
Fantastic option for those figuring out how they want to carry Review by Nick

I bought this holster after I had gotten my concealed carry license, and I wasn't sure how I would want to carry. This is more expensive than any single holster option, but given that I wanted to experiment with a variety of carry positions, it is FAR cheaper than buying even just two dedicated holster options.

I'm very happy with the fit and comfort, and changing configurations is pretty simple, made even easier with the included instructions (I recommend you look through them at least once).

FWIW, I settled on appendix carry, and I can confirm that this holster is quite comfortable in that configuration. (Posted on 11/8/2020)

I am very pleased with my rig. I carry IWB it sits nicely at the 4-5 position i really never notice it when sitting. The only issue i have had is it slips down on my underwear so I end up wearing it inside my underwear on my skin to get the grip to keep it from sliding. I wish it had an option to add some kind of grip material to the rig to help with the grip. (Posted on 10/14/2020)

i was really excited about receiving this product. unfortunately when i did i was extremely disappointed. i would say that this system seems to be fairly durable. however after using this system i encountered major issues drawing and holstering. i am using a full size p320 m17. and in the iwb configuration it is almost impossible to draw without bringing my pants with it. now i did try loosening the retention to the point the gun would fall out when tilted upside down, this did not help the problem seems to be with the grippy backing and the length of the barrel. also holstering is also an issue when you tighten the belt the trigger gaurd seems to get distorted and tends to rack the slide when trying to holster. Alien Gear Holsters responded:

Hello Jesse, Thank you so much for your feedback and we do apologize for the drawing and holstering issues here and we do want to make things right! With our IWB holsters the option with out the thumb release is called Passive retention. This type of retention relies on the retention from the adjustable retention unit and the retention from your belt. If you wear your belt tighter we recommend to loosen the retention unit to give it a good draw. Because these are passive retention holsters, this will cause the holster to be loose when you turn it upside down. We hope this helps!
