Battle Of The Barrels: Sig P320 Vs. S&W M&P9 M2.0

The Sig P320 Vs. The S&W M&P9 M2.0
If you wanted a full-size 9mm pistol that isn't a Glock, two of the most popular options are a Sig P320 or a S&W M&P9 M2.0.
Both of these guns are almost identical on paper. They're both polymer-framed, striker-fired pistols chambered in 9mm. Carrying capacity is the same. The features are almost the same.
If one has to be crowned a winner, it's probably going to be on preference. Which do YOU like more? Oh, make sure to vote for your pick in the Battle Of The Barrels on our Instagram page!
So let's talk about what might tip a person one way or another...
Sig P320 And M&P9 2.0 Specs
But...before we get into the talking points, here are the specifications of the Sig P320 and the M&P9 M2.0. As you will see, they're very, very similar.
Sig P320 (Full Size) | S&W M&P9 M2.0 | |
Barrel length | 4.7 inches | 4.25 inches |
Overall length | 8 inches | 7.4 inches |
Width | 1.4 inches | 1.3 inches |
Height | 5.5 inches | 5.5 inches |
Weight (unloaded) | 29.5 oz | 24.7 oz |
Capacity (9mm) | 17+1 | 17+1 |
MSRP* | $500 | $629 |
Take prices with a pinch of salt. Sig Sauer doesn't publish MSRP; they have a MAP (minimum advertised price) that retailers can't undercut. Street prices for these guns are basically the same; expect to see them for about $500 in most stores...but with some hunting online, you can find both for close to $400.
Both pistols have the same standard capacity and fairly similar measurements, though the M&P9 M2.0 has a slightly shorter (4.25 inches vs 4.7 inches) barrel and overall length. Both guns have a standard accessory rail.
So...what, if anything, is going to set either of these guns apart for someone?!
Well...here's a few things.
The Sig P320 Vs S&W M&P M2.0
Both are workhorse guns. Both are a good pick as a carry gun. Both are common duty pistols and both are common in IDPA, USPSA and IPSC competitions at all levels. So neither will steer you wrong.
As you can see from the specs, the M&P9 M2.0 and the Sig P320 are very, very similar...but is there anything that might set one apart from the other?
Mostly it's going to come down to preference. You'll pick one up and prefer it or find the gun makes it easier for you to make hits compared to the other.
The M2.0s grip can be tailored a little more to the user as the gun comes with backstrap panels.
The P320 either fits you or it doesn't, and a larger or smaller grip module is on YOU to buy.
While the M2.0's trigger is improved over the original, the P320's is a little smoother. However, Sig Sauer triggers (including the P320) tend to have more of a rolling break rather than a hard wall. Whether that matters depends on you, though there are plenty of aftermarket triggers for both.
Neither gun will leave you wanting for aftermarket support. Magazines, parts, concealed carry holsters, duty holsters, upgrades...they're all out there.
The P320 has more room for customization. The Fire Control Unit can be swapped into Sig Sauer or aftermarket frames, so there's that much more you can do with it if you wanted to turn yours into a project gun.
Not that you can't do a lot with an M&P9, but any sort of frame revisions will require a custom shop that does that kind of work.
So, both are good guns. Neck and neck. The question is which one do YOU like more?
