Reasons why Firearms are important to the American Family
There has been much debate in recent years over guns. Should citizens be allowed to own them? Should they have access to them? Should there be restrictions on what kind of guns we are allowed to own? Should we have to pass background checks in order to own them? These questions, and many more have been asked in recent history. Most of us have strong opinions on each issue. Rather than giving my take on each of the above questions, I want to share 7 reasons why I believe firearms are important to the American family.
1. Protection
This will most likely rank near the top, if not, the top of every gun owners list as to why they own a gun. Let's face it, we live in a dangerous world. Some will point to a lack of education, rising poverty levels, or even violent video games and claim that these are the reasons. Whatever the reason for the violence that surrounds us, the fact that it does surround us cannot be denied. We know that we cannot control what happens to us in this life. However, we can control how we handle and prepare for it. As the saying goes, "I would rather have a gun, and never need it than to need it and not have it."
2. Peace of mind
Closely related to #1 yet different. I own multiple firearms, and so does my wife. We have both taken the classes to be licensed to carry. Even though we have the tools and the legal authority behind us to carry firearms (where permitted) we have never once had to use them in a self-defense situation. I pray that we never do. The same is true for most who choose to carry. Some who oppose this right talk as if it will turn into the Wild West if everyone started carrying a gun. The truth of the matter is, those who go through the proper channels to do so are law abiding citizens. These law abiding citizens have no desire to use their weapon in this way. However, no amount of money can buy you the peace of mind that comes with knowing you could protect yourself and your family if the occasion arose.
3. Hobby
Not everything related to guns deals with shooting bad guys or robbing a bank. There are many individuals who have a healthy hobby of being a collector. Most of us collect something. Maybe it is baseball cards, a coin collection, or knick knacks purchased through travel. Some love collecting guns.
4. Right to bear arms
Owning firearms is important because it is our right to do so. If we fail to exercise our rights in a respectful way, we run the risk of these rights being threatened. We know that one rotten apple can spoil the bunch. In other words, there are irresponsible gun owners who do foolish and even tragic things. This should give us all the more motivation to show that they do not represent all or even most us.
5. Education
Owning firearms provides a perfect opportunity for . We can talk about why we have the rights that we do. We remind them of the sacrifices made so that they can enjoy these freedoms. We also take advantage of the time we have with our children to .
6. Hunting
Hunting is a very important part of our culture. Depending on where you live, it is a crucial aspect. As an avid hunter I can report that I would much prefer to hunt with a rifle than my bow. Not just because it is easier, but because it makes for easier and more ethical kills.
7. Legacy
Do you ever think about the legacy you want to leave for your children, grandchildren, friends and other family? I have two guns in my collection that I never plan to fire. They aren't the greatest craftsmanship, but they are special to me. They are special because of the ones who have died and left them in my care. How do you want to be remembered? I want to be remembered as a man who loved God, loved his family, and would protect them at all cost.
